Trayvon Martin Efigy, Bleeding, Replaced Baby Jesus In California Nativity Scene

A nativity scene in Claremont that replaces the infant Jesus with a sculpture of Trayvon Martin is seen in this split photo from Dec. 2013.
A nativity scene in Claremont California shows a figure of a bleeding Trayvon Martin instead of the baby Jesus. The scene is on display outside the Claremont United Methodist Church.

John Zachary, the artist behind the sculpture said:
“What we tried to do is make it a new way of looking at the Nativity and connecting the Nativity story with a contemporary issue,” (source)
“He was, in my view, an innocent child like the innocent children killed by King Herod,” Zachary, 57, said of Martin.
“I think the Nativity has to be relevant to our time. I think Jesus is a symbol of hope, and I think he has to be seen in today’s context.” (source)
Many people have objected to the scene which will be in place until January 5th. The Reverend of the United Methodist Church, Dan Lewis said:
“The depiction here is uncomfortable, and that’s kind of the point,”
