BREAKING NEWS: French military jet opens fire in Libya

A French plane has fired the first shots in Libya as enforcement of the UN-mandated no-fly zone begins. The target was a military vehicle, the French defence ministry said.

It came hours after Western and Arab leaders met in Paris to agree a course of action to confront Col Gaddafi.

"Our air force will oppose any aggression," said French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Earlier, pro-Gaddafi forces attacked the rebel stronghold of Benghazi. However, the Libyan government has denied launching any assault.

Bottles of water, mobile phones and sandwiches could be banned as part of severe security arrangements being considered by London 2012 organisers.

 

Families hoping to enjoy a day out at next year's Olympic Games will find they are very limited about what they can bring into any of the venues. Every bag will be X-rayed in a series of security checks as stringent as those at airports.

People booking tickets, which went on sale this week, have to sign a terms and conditions document, which runs to 7,350 words, published by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (Locog).

This list of rules and regulations makes clear that the following items are banned: "Food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, liquids in containers of greater than 100ml in size, umbrellas, horns, whistles, drums, rattles, musical instruments, or any other devices that in the opinion of Locog may disturb a session (including mobile telephones), flasks, Thermoses and in general any material that Locog may deem dangerous or that may cause damage or disruption to a session."

The conditions suggest that anyone wanting to bring a picnic to a venue – a tradition that many British sports fans indulge in at Lord's Cricket Ground or while watching the tennis at Wimbledon – will find themselves banned from entry. Mobile phones, which most people now find invaluable, are also not allowed.

Family-based therapy is recommended for treating children with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), with prescription drugs used only for children over six years old and as a last resort.

The figures, based on data from 479 GPs, show prescription rates were highest for children aged six to 12, doubling to just over eight per 1,000 in the five years up to 2008. Children aged 13 to 17 had the second highest rate at six per 1,000, while those aged 25 and over had less than one per 1,000.

Concern is greatest over children under six who should not be receiving drugs at all, says the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice).

Jet shot down over Benghazi after Obama warns Libya ruler Gaddafi to pull back

Libyan leadership declares ceasefire after UN resolution and Obama ultimatum but fighting continues

A fighter plane has been shot down and plunged into Benghazi after a night of large explosions and shelling in and around the Libyan rebel stronghold. Fighting has continued despite the regime declaring a ceasefire under threat of UN-backed air strikes.

TV footage and photographs showed the fighter passing over, then bursting into flames and coming down with the pilot apparently ejecting. Reporters in the area confirmed the crash.

There are accounts of troops entering Benghazi and the rebels putting up barricades. But the Libyan government said none of its forces were involved. "There are no attacks whatesover on Benghazi. As we said, we are observing the ceasefire and we want international observers to come," Mussa Ibrahim, a spokesman, told Reuters.

Ever since the dawn of mankind, the moon has exerted a powerful grip on our imaginations. Its proximity to our planet, its changing shape and its extraordinary beauty have all had a profound impact on our culture.

‘Oh swear not by the moon, the fickle moon, the inconstant moon, that monthly changes in her circle orb,’ wrote Shakespeare in the 16th century, reflecting this long-held fascination with the cycles of our nearest satellite.

That fascination will be intense again tonight, because the moon will be closer to Earth than at any time since 1992 — and will therefore appear in the sky to be much bigger than usual.

The moon’s orbit around the earth is extremely complex, following an elliptical, or oval, pattern as opposed to a circular one. That means that at different stages, it can be significantly closer or farther away from us.

At a lunar perigee — the word used to describe the point when it is at its closest to the Earth — the moon is about 220,000 miles away. Whereas during a lunar apogee — when it is farthest away — the distance is about 254,000 miles. Though the gap between the perigee and apogee might not seem huge, at moments like tonight’s the moon will appear much larger thanks to an optical illusion.

Because it will be low on the horizon, the moon will look vast in comparison to other objects in the distance, such as trees, hills or buildings. It is the same reason that a moon high in an empty sky appears relatively small.

The phenomenon of the lunar perigee can occur around four or five times a year, but tonight’s more dramatic version happens only once every other decade. It was first dubbed a Supermoon in the 1980s by the American astrologer Richard Nolle, who claims extreme lunar perigees can provoke tidal waves, earthquakes and storms.

A Geiger counter measurement in the muddy area taken by Martin gives a reading of around 15 counts of radioactive particles a second. That is double the amount of radiation normally found in the atmosphere in Britain. Tests from some other parts of the shoreline shoot up to 50.

Anti-nuclear campaigners blame these high levels on traces of plutonium (as well as other dangerous elements such as caesium and americium, which are used in the production of nuclear fuel) in the mud. This is because waste water from Sellafield has been discharged for decades through a pipe just two miles off the coast.

For both it was a desperate response motivated by the fear that if the fake ‘royals’ of Bahrain were to fall it could be them next. The UAE Foreign Affairs Minister, Anwar Mohammed Gargash, said the decision to support the Bahrain dictatorship reflects the determination of the Gulf states to ‘close ranks in the face of any danger’ (to their continuing tyranny).

It also reflects the fact that the American Fifth Fleet is located in Bahrain and the fact that US Defense Secretary Robert Gates met with the country's Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa on March 12th only days before the Saudi and UAE troops moved in with tanks and weapons supplied by the United States and Britain.

Young boys, in my opinion, can be pretty horrible objects: they hold distance spitting contests; think farting loudly in the classroom is fun; they award each other the most horrendous sobriquets, usually of a sexual or bodily function nature, often not actually knowing the full import of what they are saying!

If "PC Nipples" gains much experience as a genuine Police Officer then she is likely to suffer being called a range of unpleasant epithets, ranging in nature, from aspersions on her parenthood to descriptions of sexual deviancy.

It is called life: and quite normal!

Yet, as a result of the dire injury to her person, she and her colleagues set up a 'Star Chamber' – with the blind and myopic support of the school and subjected these desperados to what is called a “Restorative Justice Session”.

Now, since these sociopaths had not been accused of any crime, per se, and furthermore, since it was an alleged offence, based upon hearsay, the chance of the CPS accepting a crime had actually been committed would have been slight, to say the least.

However, "PC Nipples" and her self-appointed 'Restorative Justice Junta', acted as Police, Judge and Jury!

The headteacher of the school can equally be excoriated, for taking the side of injustice: rather than acting as a proper teacher and actually demonstrating the wisdom and power to teach and keep control of pupils: not really surprising, since one has come to expect utter slavering incompetence from educators, these days. A perspective not improved when one learns recently that circa 27% of school leavers are incapable of reading and comprehending a train time table!

Apparently, quite obviously fearing mayhem, in order to carry out the session, the famed "PC Nipples" needed the support of a sergeant, another uniformed officer, and plainclothes Community Safety Manager.

Pretty determined career criminals these boys, then.

This silly women has now, of course, made a rather significant rod for her own back: police locker rooms and canteens are noted for their banter and use of nicknames.

It would be too much to expect, naturally, that "PC Nipples" and her righteous posse could have found some real crime to detect or prevent: silly me, in the nasty outside real World, where you are called nasty names, it rains and becomes cold and there’s the chance of injury.

Much better to drive around, wasting fuel, shuttling between a nice warm station office and various schools, ensuring when youngsters grow up they think all coppers are utter fools.

Am I being over-cynical to expect, in a few years, "PC Nipples" to mount a Sexual Harassment action, over her being referred to by mammary nicknames and walking away with two hundred thousand quid or so, in order to salve her dreadful mental anguish?

Libya: Ceasefire As Tornados Head To Libya

The Libyan government has announced an immediate ceasefire, less than two hours after Prime Minister David Cameron said British fighter jets would be deployed to enforce a United Nations no-fly zone.

Foreign Minister Mousa Kousa said Libya was declaring an immediate ceasefire and stopping all military operations against rebels. Mr Kousa said the government would also "open dialogue channels" to ensure there was sustained peace in Libya.

But the Reuters news agency reported government troops were still shelling the rebel-held western city of Misratah, killing at least 25 people including children. International relations experts said the Libyan announcement of a ceasefire gives the regime of dictator Muammar Gaddafi breathing space as the UN-backed states work on a response.

Australia: Christmas Island detention centre hit by riots

Asylum seekersprotest against delays in processing applications at Australian offshore detention centre

More than 200 rioters set fire to buildings in a bid to escape from a crowded Australian offshore detention centre, according to officials. Police fired non-lethal so-called bean bag rounds and teargas canisters to regain control over the centre on Christmas Island after a riot broke out on Thursday night, said to the immigration minister, Chris Bowen.

Two administration buildings were burned as well as seven accommodation tents after asylum seekers armed with bricks and poles charged police and the perimeter fences, the Australian federal police deputy commissioner, Steve Lancaster, said. Some rioters breached the perimeter wall and police were not yet sure whether all had been recaptured, he said. Two asylum seekers were taken to hospital, one with chest injuries and another suffering chest pains.

The riot follows a week of sometimes violent protests at immigration detention centres on the Indian Ocean island and on the Australian mainland over delays in processing asylum applications. Authorities are struggling to cope with increasing numbers of asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Sri Lanka who attempt to reach Australia by boat.

UK: Petrol prices have soared ALREADY 5p in the past month: Drivers' groups make last-ditch plea before Budget

Drivers braced for an up to 5p-a-litre increase in fuel duty on April 1 have already suffered a similar surge in petrol and diesel prices over the past month, according to figures from the AA.

Average UK petrol prices have risen from 128.81p a litre in mid-February to a new record of 132.88p in mid-March. Average diesel pump prices have gone up 4.97p a litre in the same period, from 134.01p to an all-time high of 138.98p, said the AA which urged the Chancellor to use the Budget to scrap the planned April fuel duty rise.

For petrol car owners, the 4.07p average increase in pump prices has added more than £2 to the cost of tank of petrol and a family with two petrol cars has seen the monthly petrol bill go up £8.64 over the past month. Northern Ireland remains the most expensive region for petrol, averaging 133.8p a litre.

All six plant reactors broke down. Four so far experienced explosions. Others could happen any time. Four are in serious trouble. All face potential full meltdowns, perhaps ongoing at one or more reactors, but government and media reports won't say.

Six footballers jailed over gang rape of 12-year-old girls in midnight park orgy

Six footballers who had a midnight sex orgy in a park with two 12-year-old girls, have been jailed.

Courtney Amos,19, Ashley Charles, 20, Dennis De Sousa, 18, Jahson Downes, 20, Jahvon Edwards, 19, and Luke Farrugia, 21, have all admitted rape of a girl under the age of 13.

Downes is a former Reading FC academy player, who until recently played for Basingstoke Town, in Hampshire, while Ashley Charles also attended the academy, Luke Farrugia plays for Reading Town and Courtney Amos has also completed two years of football coaching.

Reading Crown Court heard how the soccer players were encouraged by the schoolgirl 'Lolitas' - with one allegedly sending them a text message saying: 'We can have three each.'  Several of the players had been part of the Reading FC football academy and all had been together on the night of the rapes - Saturday February 21 last year.

Judge Stephen John heard that the six players picked up the two girls and drove in two Vauxhall Corsa cars to a recreation ground in Reading, Berkshire, where one of the 12-year-olds was raped by five of the men.
