Britain driving test centres to be axed
Britain's driving test centres are to be closed and examiners are to be located in variety of private firms, such as supermarkets, said Driving Standards Agency.
It is said that the DSA has studied the plan to axe test centres and transfer them to private firms.
The plan would also affect the motorcycle testing facility in Perth.
Angus SNP MP Mike Weir said: “Those whom it will impact have had no chance to make their views known. They are being faced with a diktat from an uncaring government agency.”
According to the Public and Commercial Services union, the DSA is to cut the costs. It also said that the idea of driving tests to be conducted by other private firms has been discussed.

This year alone, and it is a typical year, America's parliament passed a measly 30,000 new laws, that add to tens of hundreds of thousands of existing laws, in the land of the Free. This is the same nation that preaches to us, subhumans, about the needs of freedom and sets such examples to the world as 4 million in prison, more than China which has 5 times more population, and 6 million on parole. It is the same nation whose cops, in the form of SWAT teams, or military speznaz style commandos, murder their own civilians, by accident of course, on a daily basis.
Out of the American laws, there is such as thing as Blue Laws. This is a term that most Americans do not even know, but it is what happens to old or out dated laws, that is, they go out of regular usage and to pastor, to be brought out and used to destroy people's lives, on a at choice basis.
NEW YORK SMOKING BAN
SMOKING is set to be banned from New York’s parks and beaches in a landmark ruling. New York City Council backed a bill to ban smoking in 1,700 of the city parks and along 14 miles of beaches. The controversial ban has split the city’s politicians. Council speaker Christine Quinn said: “The health and lives of non-smokers should not be negatively impacted because other people have decided to smoke.”
But Robert Jackson, council member for Manhattan, said: “We’re moving towards a totalitarian society.” And Daniel Halloran, council member for Queens, said: “Next we will be banning smoking on pavements, then in the cars of people who are driving children and then in their homes.”
The smoking ban, which is set to become law in May, will be the toughest in the US. Offenders who light up in public areas, including pedestrian malls and plazas such as tourist hotspot Times Square, will be fined $50 (£31).
UK ‘FACES £7.5BN EU FINE OVER DEBTS’
EUROPEAN Union chiefs could get powers to slap fines running into billions of pounds on Britain and other member nations under plans put forward by Euro-MPs yesterday.
In a move that raised fears of even more British taxpayers’ cash being grabbed by Brussels, the European Parliament discussed a huge hike in the penalties for alleged financial irregularities. Supporters of the plan want countries who flout financial directives from the European Commission to be hit with fines equivalent to a maximum of 0.5 per cent of their national output.
The measure is designed to help prevent future debt crises such as those that have embroiled Greece and Ireland. In Britain’s case, it could lead to a fine of around £7.5billion if Eurocrats disapprove of budget measures taken by the Government.

Police in Bangladesh have arrested four Islamic clerics after a teenage girl was whipped to death for allegedly having an illicit relationship with a married man.
The clerics are accused of ordering 14-year-old Mosammet Hena to receive 100 lashes in a fatwa or religious edict at a village in southwestern Shariatpur district, the area's police chief AKM Shahidur Rahman said. The area is 35 miles from the capital, Dhaka.

Danish cartoonist attacker is jailed
A Somali man convicted of terrorism for breaking into the home of a Danish cartoonist who had caricatured the Prophet Muhammad has been jailed for nine years.
The Aarhus city court ruled today that Muhideen Mohammed Geelle should be deported after his sentence.
The 29-year-old entered Kurt Westergaard's home armed with an axe on New Year's Day 2010. Westergaard locked himself inside a panic room and was unharmed. Police arrived and shot Geelle in the leg.
Geelle was found guilty yesterday.
Westergaard's drawing was one of 12 cartoons of Muhammad published by a Danish newspaper in September 2005, triggering violent protests across the Muslim world four months later.
'US Offering Illuminati Plan for Mubarak to Quit'

Unilever warns of price rises as food costs soar

Unilever, the consumer goods firm whose brands include Flora and Persil, today warned that more price rises were on the horizon as it struggled to digest rocketing commodity prices.
Its chief executive, Paul Polman, said foods made with edible oils such as margarine and salad dressings would be hardest hit. The price of palm oil and sunflower oil has risen by 75% and 60% respectively in the last year.
Crude oil was also up 40%, he said, which pushed up the cost of bottling products such as Timotei shampoo or Domestos bleach. "We continue to live in volatile times but the business is in significantly better shape than it was two years ago," he said, blaming the poor harvests caused by flooding and other unforeseen weather events such as Cyclone Yasi.
His comments came as the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN said world food prices had surged to a record high in January, for the seventh consecutive month. Its food price index was up 3.4% from December to the highest level since the organisation started measuring food prices in 1990.

EDL protest attracts European far-right activists

Far-right activists from across Europe will join thousands of English Defence League supporters tomorrow for the biggest rally in the group's 20-month history.
Police expect up to 7,000 demonstrators to descend on Luton, the Bedfordshire town where the EDL started in spring 2009, amid evidence of the group's growing influence among young people.
The organisation has staged more than 30 protests since it was formed, many of which have been marred by Islamophobia, racism and violence.
This rally will see more than more than 25 coaches transport members of the EDL's "divisions" to Luton from across the UK, with thousands more activists due to make their way by car or train. One EDL supporter said 800 far-right supporters would be meeting at Kings Cross train station in London before travelling north.
UK-based members will be joined by activists from recently formed copycat "defence leagues" in Norway, Sweden and Holland – as well as supporters of more established far-right groups from France, Germany and Denmark.
"The significance of the EDL marching in Luton extends way beyond our shores," said Lowles.
"Across Europe and in North America anti-Islamic groups are watching the EDL with interest, increasingly copying their tactics, even replicating their name. The attendance of so many international supporters is testament to the EDL's role in the international anti-Islam movement."

The country has been gripped for several months by an angry debate on multiculturalism with many Germans voicing their concerns over immigration. Hesse, a state run by Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats, has now became the first German region to ban Muslim face veils for public sector workers.
Hesse Interior Minister Boris Rheinsaid it was 'not acceptable' for a teacher in Frankfurt to wear a face veil because 'public sector workers are obligated to have neutral religious and political views'.
The decision was prompted by a local teacher who had told her school she wanted to wear a burka in the classroom after returning from maternity leave. She had not previously worn one.Debates about outlawing burkas have spread across Europe after France banned the Muslim face veils.

Are we likely to see more people taking to the streets?
This kind of lawless behaviour is becoming commonplace. Tour the centre of any British city at night and you will see hordes of young people climbing over parked cars, fighting and vomiting in the gutters.
Is the protest movement confined to students?

The Internet Address and Naming Agency (IANA), which doles out blocks of new internet addresses (consisting of machine-addressable numbers rather like a phone book), said on Tuesday morning that it will allocate the last seven remaining blocks of addresses this month, including three to the overall internet registrar for Asia and the Pacific.
This could mean that in a year's time you may hear about a new site – yet when you type its address into a web browser or click a link to it on a web page, your computer simply won't connect to it because it will use an addressing system entirely different to the one used before.
It could even get worse than that, according to James Blessing, a member of the board of the UK's Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA). "You might find that you can't get online unless someone else goes offline," he said. "It would be like the internet before broadband, when everything was on dial-up modems, and if too many people were dialling in then you couldn't get connected."

Among other measures, a Jewish umbrella organization said it wants Holocaust deniers punished under rules usually reserved for drunk drivers, shoplifters, and football hooligans.
Under the "snelrecht," or "fast justice" policy, police and prosecutors offer offenders a choice immediately after their arrest between a fine or a court appearance within two months.

Why did Finkelstein avoid Zionism questions?
Norman Finkelstein’s talk at UM-D on Wednesday was instructive and revealing—though not, I’m sure, in the way he intended.
The event began with him speaking for about an hour and 20 minutes, mostly on the December 2008 invasion and massacre in Gaza. He recounted the usual facts about that tragic event, facts that were probably well known to nearly everyone in the lecture hall. He spent about 20 minutes on the Mavi Marmara incident of last May, and another 10 on recent events. His talk concluded with no new news, no controversial statements—only the usual condemnation of Israeli atrocities that any decent person would find appalling.
Then came time for questions. I was the first. I said: “Norm, during your talk you offered neither discussion nor criticism of the Zionist project. This suggests that you find Zionism either irrelevant or unimportant to the question of Palestine. So I have a three-part question for you: (1) What is your definition of Zionism? (2) What percent of Jewish Americans are Zionists? and (3) Are you a Zionist?”
For the next 15 minutes, literally, the audience was treated to a rambling, incoherent response that failed to even address, let alone answer, any of the three questions. This gist of his answer, as far as I can tell, consisted of a dismissal of the term “Zionism” as irrelevant to modern-day society. Labeling people is counter-productive, he seemed to say. We don’t want to upset anyone, he implied. Finkelstein ended his reply by stating explicitly, regarding the question of his own Zionism, “I refuse to answer that.” (This non-answer drew applause from a few members of the audience, including Nabeel Abraham of HFCC.)

Global food prices hit new record high
Global food prices have hit a new record high, amid fears that the escalating cost of bread and meat is adding to the turmoil in the Middle East.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UN FAO) gave warning that the high prices, already above levels in 2008 which sparked riots, were likely to rise further.
The FAO measures food prices from an index made up of a basket of key commodities such as wheat, milk, oil and sugar, and is widely watched by economists and politicians around the world as the first indicator of whether prices will end up higher on shop shelves.
The index hit averaged 230.7 points in January, up from 223.1 points in December and 206 in November. The index highlights how food prices, which throughout most of the last two decades have been stable, have taken off in alarming fashion in the last three years. In 2000 the index stood at 90 and did not break through 100 until 2004.
Surging food prices have come back into the spotlight after they helped fuelled protests that toppled Tunisia's president in January. Food inflation has also been among the root causes of protests in Egypt and Jordan, raising speculation other nations in the region would secure grain stocks to reassure their populations.
Abdolreza Abbassian, an economist at the FAO, said: "The new figures clearly show that the upward pressure on world food prices is not abating.
