Police Demand New Stop and Search Powers After Human Rights Ruling Scraps Previous Law

Americans rate Queen Elizabeth as their sixth most admired woman - behind Sarah Palin and Oprah Winfrey
Brain dead Americans have ranked Queen Elizabeth as their sixth most admired woman - behind Sarah Palin and Oprah Winfrey.
A poll, carried out by USA Today-Gallup, asked respondents what man and woman, living anywhere in the world, they most admired. Rankings from one to 10 were based on total mentions and reported in percentages.
The survey, released on Monday, placed Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton as the most-admired woman for the ninth year in a row, edging out former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and TV host Oprah Winfrey, as she did last year.
Obama has been the poll's most-admired man since his election in 2008. With 22 percent choosing him, Obama leads his predecessors, George W. Bush, with 5 percent, and Bill Clinton, with 4 per cent.
Rounding out the top 10 most-admired men, with 2 percent or less: former South African President Nelson Mandella, computer tycoon Bill Gates, Pope Benedict XVI, the Rev. Billy Graham, former President Jimmy Carter, talk-show host Glenn Beck and the Dalai Lama.

Iranian General Killed in Israeli Jail?
'A source says retired Iranian general Ali-Reza Asgari may have been killed by Mossad in an Israeli prison, the Eurasia Review reports.
There have been “new and astonishing developments in the case of Prisoner X," writes Richard Silverstein on the Eurasia Review website, claiming that a source within the “inner circle” of Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak has identified the prisoner as the Iranian general.
According to Silverstein, Asgari may have been murdered, and not committed suicide as reports of the prisoner's mysterious death suggested.'

Alleged Mossad agent was said to have leaked information, including details of missile programme, on 'foreign trade' trips
Iran yesterday hanged a man accused of spying on the country's military apparatus for the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad.
The Iranian judiciary announced through the official IRNA news agency that Ali Akbar Siadat had been executed at Tehran's Evin Prison after being found guilty of passing on information, including details of the missile programme of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards.
According to an official list of charges, which included accusations of "spreading corruption on earth" and "supporting the Zionist regime", Mr Siadat was repeatedly paid up to $7,000 (£4,555) a time for meetings with Israeli agents abroad between 2004 and his arrest in 2008. IRNA claimed that he had also confessed to being paid an initial $60,000 to begin a career in espionage during which he transferred data to the agents on "foreign trade" trips to Turkey, Thailand and the Netherlands with a digital camera, transmitters and a laptop.
Unemployment set to hit 17-year high
Fresh doubt is cast today on government claims that the private sector will be able to absorb the 330,000 jobs ministers admit will be lost in the public sector by 2015.
According to a major report, unemployment next year is predicted to soar to a 17-year high of 2.7 million. While the economy is still forecast to expand next year, that growth may be insufficient to prevent the jobless total climbing, which will add to fears of a "jobless recovery".
For those still in work, wage rises will run far below the level of inflation; around 2 per cent is forecast to be the norm, against price rises of around double that level for much of the year.
Israeli authorities deny Palestinian prisoners access to lawyers
Israeli security services deny Palestinian detainees access to legal advice or family before confessions are signed.
The Public Committee Against Torture in Israel (PCATI) and the Palestinian Prisoners' Club say detainees from the occupied West Bank are cut off from the rest of the world in Israeli detention facilities. The report also cited cases of "systematic violence" and torture.
Between 70% and 90% of the detainees in the years 2005 to 2007 were not allowed to meet a lawyer able to provide advice and assistance prior to signing a confession, say the organisations. The average time prisoners represented by the group were isolated from the outside world was 16.7 days. Irit Ballas, a lawyer and one of the report's authors, said the situation has remained the same for the past three years. "The information we receive from our lawyers tells us that the incommunicado detention has not decreased," he said.

Britain Forms Plan for Gulf Evacuation in Event of War with Iran

These are just some of the 350,000 fatwas, or Islamic religious decrees, that have been thought up by Muslim scholars on their website in Abu Dhabi that has a 'call centre' for those seeking guidance.
They cover a vast range of personal and religious questions submitted online, over the phone or via text to the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments (Awqaf). The centre, which employs 50 scholars, mostly male, has issued a total of 343,121 decrees this year and plans to hire twice the amount of muftis next year to accommodate growing demand for answers.
By November 1 Awqaf had issued 298,277 fatwas this year, with most inquiries made by phone. The centre was averaging about 1,000 fatwas a day.
Car raffles are out because they are 'a kind of gambling', and an afternoon nap is banned because the time could be used more productively. But half sisters are allowed to shake hands with their brothers, even if their mother is a Christian. Speaking of women, the centre ruled that there are no specific prayers for 'getting a husband' and women may live alone 'as long as it was in a safe place'.
Another fatwa called on worshippers to 'be clean' when heading to the mosque and to avoid overeating garlic less the smell 'offends' others.

Research student Omar Choudary described in an MPhil research project how to build a gadget that tricks chip and PIN machines into accepting cards without a valid PIN. The cigarette packet-sized device can be concealed up a sleeve while attached to a card. When the card is inserted into a chip and PIN machine at a till, the device uses electronics to ensure the card is accepted.
Mr Choudary was able to buy books and CDs worth £50 in Cambridge HMV using a borrowed card and the device. Miss Johnson wrote to the university press office demanding that it remove all details of Mr Choudary’s device from its website.
